Venus rises tomorrow in remarkable circumstances. Visible less than a fingerwidth above the horizon, even in the glow of dawn, she affirms everything which is wondrous in the feminine. The chart should speak for itself, but note the star in the Hero’s side, Adam’s Rib, splitting the attenuated masculinity of retrograde Mars and Saturn. I do wish more men would listen when I talk about the stars.Venus Conjunct Uranus Apr23Spontaneous Venus is not only in tight conjunction with the hidden daring of Uranus, but the two are invisibly in the line of stars which in the Southern Hemisphere constitute the horizontal fish of Pisces.

The asterisms we associate with corporate functions, football grand finals and racing carnivals, those we see in the Spring night sky, are not just horse (Pegasus), jockey (Pisces) and catering steward (Aquarius), as SHA depicts them, although the affinity many young women have with horses is worthy of mention.

They look a lot different by day. The vast sweep of sky between the winter splendour of the heart of the galaxy and the summer spectacle of the Orion Arm provides a number of obstacles to the progress of the Sun by day.

Once she crosses the plain of Capricorn, battling the northerly crosswinds of February, she must negotiate the confluence of rivers that is Aquarius, and then there is the trudge up into the foothills of Pisces, and over its two ridges.

Uranus has been mysteriously camped on the slopes of the first one for two years, where Venus joins it for a giggle in the morning, but no holiday whim is it for the Sun. She is oblivious to the mystery of that ridge: where it leads, what lies at its end. Surely not Venus.

The feint circle of five stars known in astronomy as the Circlet of Pisces is a mysterious clearing on an escarpment at the western end of the ridge, in an ancient forest choked with bracken and creepers and fallen leaves. The beaten path is some distance off, and the silence of sensuous presence prevails, but a ghostly commotion whispers to any traveller who stumbles here.

This was the site of a great castle for centuries. Here it was that the Knights of the Round Table committed to the quest for the Holy Grail, where Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger and slept for a hundred years. Before that it was a hill fort of the Iron Age, and some say that once it was Valhalla, and before that Mt Olympus. More recently, it was Netherfield Park and Les Sablonnières.

I seem to remember a scene in which the astonished Meaulnes witnesses the carriages arrive by torchlight at the stately home, the opulence which surrounds him and beckons him to the life-achievement which will elevate him to this noble company. Remember the magical countenance in your own experience of one in such company entranced by you!

It was here that the romantics of yesteryear met and instantly fell in love with their dream, transforming themselves and each other into ‘the One’. The Circlet was their crown. What haunts this place is romance, and the voices you can’t quite make out are the embodiment of projected love-images clamouring for release from desire.

In 2011, the Moon found his holy grail in the stately home which stood here then. The intervening years have persuaded him that the love of his life does not exist outside a dream, and now steers wide of it, and of faith in the possibility that it might be love for a woman which gives meaning to his existence. This place is his wound, the impetus of the dilettante.

The nineteen-year cycle of the lunar nodes is the mechanism of the Moon’s relationship with the Circlet. It passed visibly through it (though seen loitering in the vicinity at first or last light on numerous other occasions of the period) at:

  • 05:00 06/09/09
  • 05:00 06/06/10
  • 04:00 27/8/10
  • 01:00 17/11/10
  • midnight 16-17/8/11
  • 21:00 06/11/11
  • 04:00 12/06/12

and nineteen years previously….

Do any of those dates resonate with grand memories of your romantic youth? Perhaps one of these was your wedding day.

The Moon returns to the Circlet’s haunt:

  • 02:00 30/10/28
  • 01:00 30/07/29
  • Midnight 19-20/10/29
  • 06:00 26/05/30
  • 23:00 19/07/30
  • 03:00 10/10/30
  • 02:00 10/07/31
  • 23:00 02/09/31
  • Midnight 23-24/11/31.

Perhaps he will enter a new mansion, perhaps he will find a mirage. Either way, it will be no delusion. May circumstance rescue you from the disease of living to heal a wound.

Venus also knows the clearing well. She did her retrograde loop nearby in 2009, and will double back to thoroughly investigate its mythical qualities this time next year, and again in 2025. I hope romance outlives us all!

Calendar, Moon

Without further ado, here is the Southern Hemisphere Astrology Moon Chart for 2016.You can download it in PDF format at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5UrGeMeNFdtamFYbmFaa0ZvT2s/view?usp=sharing

2016 Moon ChartReaders of SHA are given notice that we will henceforth cease the craven practice of using Northern symbols for the nodes of the lunar orbit. The upward half-loop indicates ‘above’, and symbolises in conventional northern hemisphere astrology the moment the Moon’s orbit carries it above the path of the Sun. At that moment in the south the Moon is heading downwards, so naturally the downward half-loop is fitting. An end to mystifying symbols! The symbols used in the Moon Chart show us immediately which way the Moon is heading in our view of things.

[I doubt that many people need more specific information than is shown in the chart, but comprehensive predictions of phase times and locations and much else will be available for free download in a few days, as an “emu up a gum-tree”, in the form of the 2016 Post-Humanist Melbourne Sky Calendar.]

Finitude, Healing, Limerence, Love, Moon, Raphael, Regulus, Venus, Venus Occultation

Like all creatures, we live only for a short time and then pass into oblivion from whence we came. Our immense blessing is to be aware of this, because together with fear and grief come joy and compassion.Occultation of Venus

Happiness is easy. All it takes is to be one with the universe, like a bird. Joy is more difficult. It requires conscious finitude and transcendence at the same time.

It has become fashionable to deconstruct the self, to “get out of story”, realize cosmic oneness in “the moment”, and be “present” in relationship. These contrivances too are easy.

What is difficult is to be in love with someone: lonely and connected; insignificant and eternal; guilty and forgiven; afraid and monumental.

This description fits the definition of limerence, an acutely painful disorder which it is fashionable to identify with a wound we need to heal, by dealing with our “stuff”, by doing “deep work”. In fact, limerence exists only in the mind of the friend in Justfriendistan, the one who is not in love.

Our wound is our humanity, people. We were born to carry it and know it. Our most precious moments are our most finite, our most grievous and most joyous, those moments when life explodes like the galaxy in a death-black sky.Venus Occultation Melbourne Oct09

Raphael, the archangel, is the archetype of healing, but do not understand him as one who makes suffering go away. Raphael heals the avoidance of suffering. He returns eyesight to the blind. His sarcasm stings to remind you that you are not a fool, not a baby, not a coward. How dare he, indeed! And how dare you pretend your finitude is not happening!

Venus will be free of Justfriendistan Saturday, and while the Moon sinks humbly into irrelevance, Venus, goddess of love, will once again be the resplendent Morning Star, a naked warrior, and worthy Jupiter is above the horizon.

Praise of the ground of our creatureliness is Regulus’ reward.

Apogee, Lilith, Moon, Nodes

No sooner had the Moon expressed his internal grumble about the satisfaction-deficit of excess humility, than the clouds which had muffled his course for a week peeled completely from the early morning sky, the surf thundered encouragement, a great eagle soared up to accompany him, and his face blazed once more a youthful recognition of the world’s glory.

You make a fundamental mistake if you look at the Moon and see only a reflection of the Sun. Do still look, lest you never journey beyond your opinions, and one day you may see, not a rock enmeshed in our spacetime, not a being of indeterminate age and gender shuffling away, but your own reflection earnestly ablaze with one question, what ought I be about?

In The Sickness Unto Death, Kierkegaard identifies a state of existence you might recognize, the state of being without purpose, of being in despair. Is the Moon in despair? Is he ignorant of eternity, celebrating regularity, dedicated to escape?

Of all the resonances, polarities and affinities proffered by astrology to serve as keys to the infinite, some but not all useless to unlock Southern Hemisphere shutters, I suggest you pay attention to the Nodes and to Lilith. In them you will find the Moon trying to follow his calling.

The Moon, just like us, is a tiny entity in the scheme of things, swept off his feet by the gigantic power of the Sun, but of two compliments he is deserving, just like you: firstly, he never ceases to steer himself, even though the current be overpowering; and secondly, just look around, untold physical reactions pay homage to him here on Earth.

He epitomises the activity of relating finite and infinite, of not just being conscious of the freedom he has in the system he cannot resist, but realizing himself in the doing of it.

I hope in trying not to describe or explain too much I do not succeed only in mystifying the anthropic links drawn in my horoscopes between the ever-changing locations of the Moon, the Node he most recently passed, and the Apogee where in the instant he focusses on his folly and our fault.

They are the Moon’s instincts…

Moon

Last night I was searching for bi-wheel chart templates and stumbled against traditional astrology’s contempt for any effort to apply its interpretations to what is in the sky, the motive which gave it birth.

“The concept of “return charts” and of transits altogether is – on a deeper level – a symbolic concept rather than a physical concept. It should therefore be applied in a consistent symbolic system and not in an inconsistent potpourri of systems.” Astrodienst.

I get that, and who am I to get mixed up in a fight with the big guys? I don’t pretend to be an astrologer. I am merely one of the hordes through the centuries who has gazed up at the Constellation of his Sun Sign and yearned for a consistent symbolic system to connect human life, Constellation and Sign.

The symbols of western tropical astrology may be consistent, and fit neatly and ‘eternally’ into the beautiful symmetry of the Solar System, but I find many of them to be empty, in the sense that the symbol of an ant for human progress is empty when I am trying to cross the road. What is a symbol without content but a signal of delusion, a useless distortion of reality?

The symbolism of the Zodiac must wait for later consideration. The symbol which engages me today is the “Descending” Node, the real moment when the Moon crosses the plane of Earth’s orbit of the Sun, heading downwards, or towards the South Celestial Hemisphere.

We millions of emigrants from across the Equator brought with us a respect for ‘consistency’ verging on idolatry and leading us into disrespect for “primitive” people and “inhospitable” country. Yes, North is ‘up’, but isn’t it nice to find a lunar calendar on the web which shows the phases on the correct side? You may be completely unable to imagine a map of your country drawn ‘upside down’–yes, such a thing is conceivable– but I find the universal representation of the Constellations the ‘wrong’ way up completely useless

So it is with the Nodes of the Moon. Today the Moon ascends, heads upwards to the south! So where does that leave the astrological symbolism of the Nodes’ resonance with karma and challenge? Turned on its head, of course!

Because of the fact that the Moon is crossing the Ecliptic very close to the Aries Point (the real origin of the western astrological system), the real intersection of Ecliptic and Celestial Equator in Pisces, it will be the highest it is ever seen in Gemini on February 28 when it reaches its southernmost ecliptic latitude, and that does symbolize something to me!

More on that at the time. For now, I offer you an illustration of a southern perspective on today’s event. Zoom for higher resolution at this link:
