Just get on with it, was my mother’s philosophy. Tomorrow the Sun overtakes Arcturus, the star which culminates at nightfall in Early Spring.Sun Overtakes Arcturus Oct31

The division between Spring and Summer is CRAZED. Regardless of the weather, a profound change is manifesting itself in creaturely behaviour: it is the evolution, out of the turbulence of Spring, of ATTITUDE, nothing less than a consciousness, like a shipwrecked immigrant’s clinging to a slippery rock in thunderous surf, that possibility has limits, and they are OUR limits as integrated selves.

How joyfully consequential is our participation as organisms in the tumultuous SPECIES renewal of Virgo and the existential angst of Libra! But now consequence begins to overwhelm. Now is the hour of our fruiting, our parenthood.
Summer is DESTINY, not consequence: the duty is upon us to BE consequence, mindfully though we try.

High Summer draws the line, not when the Sun enters Scorpio (and certainly not Capricorn—outdated northern tropical geometry). Summer comes simply, whatever the date, when Spring gets TOO MUCH!

What is the sign?High Summer Nov09

[Imagine being of the first generations (as indeed you may be). Would you not be enlivened by the suspicion, if not the discovery, since you lack more than rudimentary method, that the Sun’s shortest shadow is always cast in the same direction? This is the mystical reality of North. Are you alive to it? No? North is one of the poles of Earth’s rotation, and that’s that? Perhaps you can at least feel a difference between morning and afternoon, some sense of alignment of the source of light with the enthusiasm, procrastination, culmination and disappointment of the day’s intention? Understand the division of the day at North by astrologers, and the implicit association of the afternoon with a depletion of energy and a recognition of social complexities which must console the frustration of egoic impulse. Recognise the Geometry embedded in your human soul. Look to the North at nightfall.]

The small, landlocked, ethnically Arian principality of Aries is in turmoil tonight, as a horde of refugees sweeps across its borders following the announcement of an historic accord between the Eastern and Western Blocs of constellations, which imposes on members cooperation with, and acknowledges responsibility for, the so-called Second Diaspora. A delegation of celebrities from Leo is on its way to urge the government to show compassion, and to apply restraint as activists on the steps of parliament fan the embers of bitter resentment which remain in Aries from the treaty which displaced it so many years ago.Peasant Moon 2015

Sources have confirmed that the bounty of this year’s harvest could well remain ungathered as the rural population move en masse to the capital, in open disregard of the national interest, to assert what amount to isolationist agrarian values. Their spiritual leader is a pugnacious priest who calls himself ‘Father Moon’, a renowned bullfighter before the ‘sport’ was banned as one of the conditions Aries was forced to accept for continuing membership of the Western Bloc.

With violent confrontation between farmers and refugees seeming inevitable, Government spokespeople were this evening remaining tight-lipped.Peasant Moon Oct27

‘What therefore God hath joined together

[“Whose is that mewling page-boy, and why did the bride wear yellow?”

“I have a bad feeling about this, but who am I to say anything? I just feel that a celebrity wedding even more than others should reinforce my faith in marriage and family (as the foundation of eternal life…hahaha), and yet just watching from the steps, I just can not get into the spirit of this!”

“I know, darling! They just seem to be playing another part. It’s all about the cameras! Am I being too cynical, love?”

“Shh…the whole thing must be costing a fortune!”

“The bridegroom is just not me, darling! That’s a big part of it…but that chauffeur! He definitely is!”

“Oh you incorrigible slut!”]

…let not man put asunder.

‘They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

‘He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.’

Chronotypes, Libra

The history of this country can be presented as the dispossession of the indigenous inhabitants. It can also be understood as a gradual dispossession of the settlers: an erosion of the spirit. The pioneers were European, mainly British, consciously and unconsciously formed by a culture springing from a peculiar sense of time and place, elsewhere and rapidly elsewhen. The generations born here were obliged to engage in a process of making sense of themselves as non-European Europeans, and are still doing it. Underlying that process, fresh in the minds of recent immigrants, increasingly unconscious in the descendants of earlier arrivals, is a sense of separation, which causes an initial irrational reinforcement of meanings which derive from experience elsewhere, but slowly penetrates, evaluates and distances itself from those meanings.

People generally don’t sit around discussing meaning. They share it. They don’t gravitate towards others who share the same anxieties, but rather towards others who repress anxiety in the same practices. Some Australians go to church or temple; some think and dream in a foreign place, in a foreign language or dialect. Descendants of early settlers largely do not. Their culture imposes itself in other ways, which often seem materialistic, shallow and ill-equipped to understand, let alone answer, questions such as, who am I? what is my life for? what do you mean? Many Australians die without a personally satisfactory resolution of these questions.

In many ways perhaps the starkest inadequacy of Australian culture, which even calls into question that we have one, is our failure to share ownership of our country with the people we took it from. The invisible alignment of the Sun with the constellation Libra—aha, I finally get to the point—gives me the opportunity to suggest a perspective which might help.

In my mind, the resonances of ‘Libra’ encapsulate everything I’ve been saying. Historically, this is not the time of year for treaties, for understanding and acknowledging the impact of our behaviour on others, or for listening and responding to voices counselling our alienation. It is crunch time. The season will not wait. Whether or not to cut down those trees, what to do about the blackfellas in the creekbed, the ailing health of faraway kin, are all matters which must be put aside until the hay is in the shed. It’s not even an ordering of priorities, but an imperative. This is how I understand the occupation of this country, in terms of imperatives.

Life is not a journey, or at least it only appears as one at the end of the day when we have the opportunity to construct its narrative. Rather, it is one imperative after another, and it is cyclical, not linear. When the Sun rises it is time to get up, when we are hungry it is time to eat, when we are lonely it is time to seek fellowship, and when we ride into town it is time to arrange the evacuation of the blackfellas in the creekbed.

The constellation Libra has since time immemorial in the northern hemisphere been seen in the night sky as the scales of justice. This season back up there is a time of growing urgency to get prepared for the onset of winter, a time to conclude hostilities, to trade, to settle. To negotiate, to conclude, to compromise, are activities which present insuperable difficulties in a society of people from all over the world. Fortunately, from the very beginning, we have been able to fall back on an institution which enables us to get things done when we don’t see eye to eye: the police force and the rule of law.

When I look at Libra, I do not see a symbol of deliberation on two sides of an argument. I see a symbol of submission in the interests of cohesion and security. I see the letter, not the spirit of the law. I see a policeman’s boot. It is the boot we have used to solve the problem of the indigenous people.

Nonetheless, it is a constellation which we see rising in early April and most prominent in the early Spring, when our anxieties are being successfully repressed by that most Melbournian cultural adherence, Australian Rules Football. The ambivalence of our attitude to organised and professional sport is what is on the scales of Libra. It is just a game, we say, but without conviction. We are disturbed by defeat and affirmed by victory, but above all we hate the umpiring, unless a free kick on the siren has handed us the game. That’s Libra.

When Libra is in the fourth house, Aries is in the tenth. The path to realisation lies in overcoming the very same instinctive passion which lies in the root of being. What mires the subject in the wheel of suffering is a paradoxical clinging to the law which others see as rebellion. The courage to get on with it is assailed on all sides by the injustice of the external system essential to self-regulation.

Today the noonday Sun enters that configuration for the first time this year. It occurs to me that you are probably unfamiliar with the houses of Southern Hemisphere Astrology, and I must get around to tagging earlier posts. However, haycarting has commenced, as it must.1st Solar Noon in Libra Chronotype Oct22

Archangels, Libra, Seasons

It is a fact in Southern Hemisphere Astrology that the life-giving spirit of the Sun is female, and the emotionally needy creature bobbing around from one Nakshatra wife to another is male. However, the sudden appearance of a host of archangels with masculine names is a sure sign that masculine dignity is in need of some restoration.

Be that as it may, the seasons in this part of the world seem to align with the transits of the ‘archangels’ in the system, not with regular intervals of the Sun’s ‘journey’. The seasons I refer to are the seasons observed by the indigenous people of this ‘country’, according to the scholarship you can find at http://www.herringisland.org/seasons.htm

What better time for a new season to announce itself than at nightfall, the only conceivable time anybody is going to glance at the stars these days? And what distinguished stars—the four ‘Royal Stars’ and the two brightest stars adjacent to the zodiac—have pushed themselves forward for the honour of making the announcements!Melbourne Seasonal Marker Stars

Impossible as it is to see, we do however know the Sun’s current position: it enters the SHA constellation Libra tonight, in the Eighth House. Fomalhaut transits at that precise moment, as if emphasis were required!Sun Enters Libra Oct21

Note that for the interpretation of signs SHA has effectively increased its ‘ayanamsa’ from its present true value of 27.744° to an even 30°. Why not simplify things? To uncouple signs from the equinoxes and align them with the constellations—opposite tropical plus one—makes a difference of two days (decreasing to zero in 160-odd years), and what is two days in this turbulent era of climate change?

11th House, Autumn Chronotype, New Moon, Nodes, Virgo

No need to apologise if my search for meaning in the sky makes no sense to you. If the sky is just a lid to you, and sunset just makes you go ooh aah, you have successfully repressed what I cannot, the question eternity presses upon me: what real difference do role, family, community and culture make in the big picture?

The time frame of science fills me with awe. When I look up at the sky, I know the stars by name, the constellations are vivid images, and time reveals itself in its cyclical guise. But when I consider that my familiarity has taken 67 years to develop, time reveals itself in another way. I count the generations of observers who measured the angular distances between stars, with perhaps only a few years to apply their familiarity, like ants wrestling leaves to the colony. Without their brief but cumulative contributions, we would not know where the Sun was, let alone the exact position of a GPS satellite.

Every increment in knowledge is a new application of what we knew before, and what you knew before was how to repress thoughts of death and get on with life, how to use technology to fill your time and make your family comfortable. However, the essence of knowledge lies in ignorance, in the sense that the essence of a tree lies in quantum processes in its leaves which contain as much atmosphere and nothingness as components of tree.

Knowledge grows towards ignorance; ignorance transcends knowledge. Meaninglessness transcends culture; despair transcends the good. That is why a modernity-hating teenage boy slaughtered a police employee. That is why I look to the sky.

New Moon measured by longitude is at 11:07 in Melbourne. Twelve hours later, it reveals its soul meaning in my sky.Imagining the Real

Finitude, Healing, Limerence, Love, Moon, Raphael, Regulus, Venus, Venus Occultation

Like all creatures, we live only for a short time and then pass into oblivion from whence we came. Our immense blessing is to be aware of this, because together with fear and grief come joy and compassion.Occultation of Venus

Happiness is easy. All it takes is to be one with the universe, like a bird. Joy is more difficult. It requires conscious finitude and transcendence at the same time.

It has become fashionable to deconstruct the self, to “get out of story”, realize cosmic oneness in “the moment”, and be “present” in relationship. These contrivances too are easy.

What is difficult is to be in love with someone: lonely and connected; insignificant and eternal; guilty and forgiven; afraid and monumental.

This description fits the definition of limerence, an acutely painful disorder which it is fashionable to identify with a wound we need to heal, by dealing with our “stuff”, by doing “deep work”. In fact, limerence exists only in the mind of the friend in Justfriendistan, the one who is not in love.

Our wound is our humanity, people. We were born to carry it and know it. Our most precious moments are our most finite, our most grievous and most joyous, those moments when life explodes like the galaxy in a death-black sky.Venus Occultation Melbourne Oct09

Raphael, the archangel, is the archetype of healing, but do not understand him as one who makes suffering go away. Raphael heals the avoidance of suffering. He returns eyesight to the blind. His sarcasm stings to remind you that you are not a fool, not a baby, not a coward. How dare he, indeed! And how dare you pretend your finitude is not happening!

Venus will be free of Justfriendistan Saturday, and while the Moon sinks humbly into irrelevance, Venus, goddess of love, will once again be the resplendent Morning Star, a naked warrior, and worthy Jupiter is above the horizon.

Praise of the ground of our creatureliness is Regulus’ reward.

Jupiter has not appeared above my horizon yet. Heavy cloud yesterday, and wisps today, but moonlight alone will probably delay its appearance, even in a cloudless sky.
