For heathen heart that puts her trust

In reeking tube and iron shard,

All valiant dust that builds on dust,

And, guarding, calls not thee to guard,

For frantic boast and foolish word–

Thy mercy on thy people, Lord!

Rudyard Kipling, Recessional.

You remember Ferdinand, the bull whose predilection beyond the ring was to lie in a meadow and saturate his existence with the scent of flowers? What presence he had, according to popular usage of the term ‘sensualism’! You have to wonder, who has more presence, a bull with his head in clouds of perfume, or an infuriated bull triggered by a toreador? It cannot be denied that presence is not generally ascribed to someone who is all there—how would we know?—but to a being we can see, a performative being. We can enjoy Ferdinand’s kind of sensuality any time the world ignores us, but to be full-time sensualists, we must emulate the myriad performers of unrestricted sensual presence to be found on the web. So there is something not quite right about Ferdinand’s presence, and that which is experienced by meditation adepts and obsessive compulsives who can filter their senses and ignore the world. What is more absurd than the lotus position when the kids need breakfast before school? You see? Astrologers know nothing about sensuality.

Nonetheless, a Full Moon in the Constellation of Libra, once associated with the scales of justice, is much more likely in the Southern Hemisphere to share a meadow with Ferdinand than to contest anachronistically systematised seasons of Earth. However, there is no absence of anxiety when you put Libra’s jackboot at the back of your head (looking south) to contemplate the skewering on an Indigenous spear of the merino known as Lupus, with the legacy of the retaliation of colonial law staining Left and Right forever.

As any neophyte can affirm, the senses impose themselves from the bottom up. Does that mean sensualists are bottom feeders? Is solitary sensuality always transgressive? Country, the Australian Indigenous term I use to signify presence in absence, is sensual if it is alive. Perhaps it all comes down to one question, how do you share country? How do you perform it? After all, the shape of your body, what you’re wearing, and what you ate for breakfast, are of no interest to authentic beings. How to perform absence? In what sense is that a meaningful question? What is the proper term for projected sensuality? Pornography? Limerence? Love? Dream? Death?

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Psalm 51:17

The Moon does it. Always has, tidally, but also in the contamination he brings to any wife and mansion from all the others. His presence brings absence and a whiff of betrayal. In a few Earth days he will cross the Acheron, and what will preserve him in its turbulence is not any forgiveness from Earth for primordial transgressions, but knowing that the last thing the crescent Earth will forget as she plunges into the Lethe is the impious hauteur of Saiph, the Moon’s naked Melanesian queen, twerking at the riverbank where she wrings eternity from her seaweed.

Crossing the rivers of Hades does it. The Vertex does it. Country does it. The forty-nine days do it. Remembrance, the Silent Minute and the Two Minute Silence do it. Can the Earth perform her presence in absence, or is she too engrossed in her comic?

The mechanism at the root of community is rectitude, confected as integrity and projected in hateful battle with any recalcitrant other which threatens its compensation. Rectitude stares at corruption and does not recognise its own reflection. Unable to find this mechanism in the self, rectitude finds itself starkly revealed in the face of the enemy. The Bardo of madness seethes with it.

Sun and Moon are conjunct in the Constellation of Libra, once the home of self-knowledge and -mastery, but consigned by the retrograde march of the seasons to the Sign of the Scorpion, whose assertiveness is better unopposed. In the South, its seasonal attributes are of the Bull. Not for nothing do we accuse each other of bullshit.

Of course, what the world of others tells you is not all lies, if you’re listening. I don’t wish to argue with you about Astrological Houses, you who make a living from imposing alien perspectives on Southern skies, but just look at the correspondence of the astro.com traditional chart of the birth of the Australian Commonwealth and compare it with a Stellarium view.

Turn the traditional numbering of the Houses back to front and upside down and they correspond. And what choice does astrology have? To show the Ascendant on the left to anyone orientated to the North looks like deliberate and self-defeating obfuscation!

The Southern way of going, if we imagine the first Spring Constellation in the First House, with the other Constellations arrayed anti-clockwise across the sky from East on the right to West on the left, introduces some strange yet resonant bedfellows to the self-defensive mind (Southern Signs in italics):-
I TEMPERAMENT Virgo Perfection Aries
II FORTUNE Leo Discrimination Pisces
III INTELLECT Cancer Paranoia Aquarius
IV REPUTATION Gemini Relativity Capricorn
V ATTACHMENT Taurus Fear Sagittarius
VI CONSTRAINT Aries Self-Development Scorpio
VII RELATIONSHIP Pisces Aggression Libra
VIII CHANGE Aquarius Relationship Virgo
IX ASPIRATION Capricorn Deprivation Leo
X REALIZATION Sagittarius Boredom Cancer
XI HOPE Scorpio Ignorance Gemini
XII MYSTERY Libra Seriousness Taurus

But, hey! Let’s not mess around with what works! Let’s not play with this confirmation bias thing lest tuning its relationship with what is really happening create identity issues, gender dysphoria or any number of other neurological implasticities. But ask yourself this question, ‘What is my intention in taking astrology seriously?’ And play with the answer, that regardless of the time of day, I may be stuck in the Twelfth House, and all you others may be holograms, projected from my Underworld memory without anyone’s consent.

Assertiveness, Libra, Rectitude, Tranquility, Vagabond

“No one can say why those seven billion billion billion atoms have such an urgent desire to be you. They are mindless particles, after all, without a single thought or notion between them. Yet somehow for the length of your existence, they will build and maintain all the countless systems and structures necessary to keep you humming, to make you you, to give you form and shape and let you enjoy the rare and supremely agreeable condition known as life.” Bill Bryson.

Every transaction is a mutual transformation. There can never be a transactional relationship which does not involve payback. Tranquility is always insecure; assertiveness is always aggressive. The hardest thing in life is to demand someone else’s respect, if that is indeed harder than losing something you no longer deserve. Do give your best, but never hope for the day it will be enough, and never rate competitors in terms of their compromises.

Libra New Kunming Underworld Oct28

Oh yes, peasantry has taught the Moon a thing or two! He is in the frame of mind in October-November to wonder what the Judge has hauled him before the Court for this time. Why does he have to be wrong to prove her right? And besides the scrutiny of her decisions, is she accountable, like the hoi polloi, for who she is? Actually, she’s a hard bitch, isn’t she? She will even admit it, on your deathbed, but even there it will be your neediness which justifies it. She never apologizes, but does express regret. You would think it a game, if it were not so serious, or perhaps you would believe it to be serious, if it weren’t so transparently a game.

Libra New London Underworld Oct28

Human life is lived on the bank of the one river flowing through every village. Piss in it, and someone downstream will be mystified by your poison. Stealing water will get you murdered. Water levels measure identity and constrain growth. Nobody, not parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme, is blessed in marriage on dead grass. Little sister, don’t you do what your big sister done. Though scientists persevere with histories and models, and politicians perfect their manufactures of our fear, the river rises in birth and in death distils an ocean somewhere beyond our experience.

Libra New Washington Underworld Oct27

We who know these things in our water are riders on the storm, and like the cackle of the wicked witch on her broomstick, the body of this knowledge has a sound: rectitude. The relationship between life and light during the billions of years before the evolution of sight lacked righteousness, but it was right. The slaughter of indigenous people and the theft of their country was not righteous, but in the fight for survival of the banished there is no righteousness, only rectitude.

Libra New Ceduna Oct28

And so way down there through time and space you go about your business, taking every opportunity to promote equality, diversity and inclusiveness, and the only doubt you harbour about your righteousness is, are you right? Are you empathic? Are you real? Are you authentic? And evenly distributed among you are riders on the storm, the emptied of righteousness, the guilty of every blasphemy, the old, who could perhaps reassure you, but they don’t speak any more. What is there to speak about? Your hope? Your dream?

Libra New Ceduna Underworld Oct28

So while I might writhe under the justice meted out by the Sun in Libra, and while I certainly resent the righteous ignorance of the jury, there is no getting away from it, the offence against me is rectitude, mine.

Libra, New Moon, Vocal Fry

How has it happened that a generation so committed to social engineering, and so engaged now with the eastern philosophy of mind, is so powerless to determine policy on climate change, involvement in the middle-east, and assimilation of ethnic and religious minorities, that they are reduced to shrill opposition? A slightly different question: how can a generation so demonstrably unsuccessful in enhancing its culture with a nutritious and marketable interpenetration of rights and obligations continue to believe that their opinions on world problems are of any value?

Where are the charismatic leaders? What are the pop idols saying? What is the image of celebrity? What are the words from the pulpit to confirm the soul of challenge to the resentful assertiveness of alien morality?

Is it simply that the parents in lotus-position are unlearning intolerance of the riot of the children? But if nothing is good, and nothing bad, how to understand the intimate coexistence of sanctimony and the idolatrous stature of difference?

At the very least, the relationship of order to freedom and peace seems to be an article of faith. Order does not bring peace, nor peace order. The analyst is enigmatic. Is the focus on solutions merely clinging to a denial of death?

This is a very insecure Moon.New Moon in Libra Nov12

Chronotypes, Libra

The history of this country can be presented as the dispossession of the indigenous inhabitants. It can also be understood as a gradual dispossession of the settlers: an erosion of the spirit. The pioneers were European, mainly British, consciously and unconsciously formed by a culture springing from a peculiar sense of time and place, elsewhere and rapidly elsewhen. The generations born here were obliged to engage in a process of making sense of themselves as non-European Europeans, and are still doing it. Underlying that process, fresh in the minds of recent immigrants, increasingly unconscious in the descendants of earlier arrivals, is a sense of separation, which causes an initial irrational reinforcement of meanings which derive from experience elsewhere, but slowly penetrates, evaluates and distances itself from those meanings.

People generally don’t sit around discussing meaning. They share it. They don’t gravitate towards others who share the same anxieties, but rather towards others who repress anxiety in the same practices. Some Australians go to church or temple; some think and dream in a foreign place, in a foreign language or dialect. Descendants of early settlers largely do not. Their culture imposes itself in other ways, which often seem materialistic, shallow and ill-equipped to understand, let alone answer, questions such as, who am I? what is my life for? what do you mean? Many Australians die without a personally satisfactory resolution of these questions.

In many ways perhaps the starkest inadequacy of Australian culture, which even calls into question that we have one, is our failure to share ownership of our country with the people we took it from. The invisible alignment of the Sun with the constellation Libra—aha, I finally get to the point—gives me the opportunity to suggest a perspective which might help.

In my mind, the resonances of ‘Libra’ encapsulate everything I’ve been saying. Historically, this is not the time of year for treaties, for understanding and acknowledging the impact of our behaviour on others, or for listening and responding to voices counselling our alienation. It is crunch time. The season will not wait. Whether or not to cut down those trees, what to do about the blackfellas in the creekbed, the ailing health of faraway kin, are all matters which must be put aside until the hay is in the shed. It’s not even an ordering of priorities, but an imperative. This is how I understand the occupation of this country, in terms of imperatives.

Life is not a journey, or at least it only appears as one at the end of the day when we have the opportunity to construct its narrative. Rather, it is one imperative after another, and it is cyclical, not linear. When the Sun rises it is time to get up, when we are hungry it is time to eat, when we are lonely it is time to seek fellowship, and when we ride into town it is time to arrange the evacuation of the blackfellas in the creekbed.

The constellation Libra has since time immemorial in the northern hemisphere been seen in the night sky as the scales of justice. This season back up there is a time of growing urgency to get prepared for the onset of winter, a time to conclude hostilities, to trade, to settle. To negotiate, to conclude, to compromise, are activities which present insuperable difficulties in a society of people from all over the world. Fortunately, from the very beginning, we have been able to fall back on an institution which enables us to get things done when we don’t see eye to eye: the police force and the rule of law.

When I look at Libra, I do not see a symbol of deliberation on two sides of an argument. I see a symbol of submission in the interests of cohesion and security. I see the letter, not the spirit of the law. I see a policeman’s boot. It is the boot we have used to solve the problem of the indigenous people.

Nonetheless, it is a constellation which we see rising in early April and most prominent in the early Spring, when our anxieties are being successfully repressed by that most Melbournian cultural adherence, Australian Rules Football. The ambivalence of our attitude to organised and professional sport is what is on the scales of Libra. It is just a game, we say, but without conviction. We are disturbed by defeat and affirmed by victory, but above all we hate the umpiring, unless a free kick on the siren has handed us the game. That’s Libra.

When Libra is in the fourth house, Aries is in the tenth. The path to realisation lies in overcoming the very same instinctive passion which lies in the root of being. What mires the subject in the wheel of suffering is a paradoxical clinging to the law which others see as rebellion. The courage to get on with it is assailed on all sides by the injustice of the external system essential to self-regulation.

Today the noonday Sun enters that configuration for the first time this year. It occurs to me that you are probably unfamiliar with the houses of Southern Hemisphere Astrology, and I must get around to tagging earlier posts. However, haycarting has commenced, as it must.1st Solar Noon in Libra Chronotype Oct22

Archangels, Libra, Seasons

It is a fact in Southern Hemisphere Astrology that the life-giving spirit of the Sun is female, and the emotionally needy creature bobbing around from one Nakshatra wife to another is male. However, the sudden appearance of a host of archangels with masculine names is a sure sign that masculine dignity is in need of some restoration.

Be that as it may, the seasons in this part of the world seem to align with the transits of the ‘archangels’ in the system, not with regular intervals of the Sun’s ‘journey’. The seasons I refer to are the seasons observed by the indigenous people of this ‘country’, according to the scholarship you can find at http://www.herringisland.org/seasons.htm

What better time for a new season to announce itself than at nightfall, the only conceivable time anybody is going to glance at the stars these days? And what distinguished stars—the four ‘Royal Stars’ and the two brightest stars adjacent to the zodiac—have pushed themselves forward for the honour of making the announcements!Melbourne Seasonal Marker Stars

Impossible as it is to see, we do however know the Sun’s current position: it enters the SHA constellation Libra tonight, in the Eighth House. Fomalhaut transits at that precise moment, as if emphasis were required!Sun Enters Libra Oct21

Note that for the interpretation of signs SHA has effectively increased its ‘ayanamsa’ from its present true value of 27.744° to an even 30°. Why not simplify things? To uncouple signs from the equinoxes and align them with the constellations—opposite tropical plus one—makes a difference of two days (decreasing to zero in 160-odd years), and what is two days in this turbulent era of climate change?
