The Beloved

Pop music gives us the clue. Something is wrong with our heart. Even if she loves us truly, forlorn hope since we don’t know who we are, it cannot last forever. In that case, dance!

We want something to last forever so we detach our heart from the body and call it love. The physical world has an analogy for our mad practice: it’s called the obliquity, the tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis to its orbital plane.

The wanting something to last forever is dukkha, the anti-vertex, and the detachment we call universal love is anicca, the vertex.

Twice a day these angles of rotation to revolution coincide with the prime vertical at the horizon, when the solstices are at midheaven. Twice a day we strut the impossibility of eternity, and twice a day you think you’re wise to it.

Amen.

How can an imaginary geometric point resonate with my feelings and emotions? How can I assert its existence in nature?

Reframe the question.

For what purpose would I create aspects of an angel in the sky or a horror beneath the earth, other than to confound or at least challenge my flimsy intellectual understanding of gender, sexuality and heart, and yours?

What in fact does exist in nature, and by what sign does it announce itself to you? Canopus is a good example. Do you know it? If I told you the Ecliptic South Pole lies roughly halfway between Canopus and the South Celestial Pole would that help make the Ecliptic viscerally real to you as the Equator of the Solar System back over your head?

Perhaps we should exercise caution with the demand that astrology source itself in nature?

Don’t worry about progressing natal horoscopes. They’re almost irrelevant.

Your universe had a name when you were born and a nature, but that has changed, and not because of any influence by the stars or the seasons, unless you have been influenced by your daily horoscope from somewhere, and modelled yourself on your astrological type.

The universe has changed because it exists in time. Each moment is a self-transformation, a breathing in of what is breathed out, new things made of old things, old things made of new. The past evolves its relevance out of the present as it asserts itself as context in structure and law. The past is the present’s food, and the present’s digestive system is synchronized, adapted as it has always been.

This is how your nature has evolved. You have chewed yourself up and spat yourself out a million times. You taste different, your appetite is different, your digestion is different, your teeth are different. If you’re my generation, you no longer sit down to dinner at noon and eat tea at night, but, horror of horrors, you eat lunch at noon, American-style, and your dinner you eat at night!

None of this was caused or foretold by the stars or implied by your nature. The universe is not subject to immutable laws which exist outside time. Your nature is to deal with your changing environment the best way you know how. It is not to influence it or keep it the same. That’s your attitude, which wasn’t ever written in the stars.

The purpose of life is to persuade the past to exist, and the present to behave. That is the nature you were born with, whether the spring equinox is in March or September, Pisces or Aries.

Eat your natal horoscope.

My Horoscopes

The practice of astrology is based on the mathematical possibility of measuring location in motion, the idea being to locate the relative position of a number of significant interacting influences at an instant of time.

When you are reading a horoscope, which is a snapshot of time, it is vital to remain aware that there is no such thing in reality as an instant of time.

When the Aries Point is on the horizon, the axes of Earth’s rotation and revolution are in alignment, and the Winter Solstice Point is due-north at Mid-Heaven. At this moment, the Vertex is exactly conjunct the Descendant, but a fraction of a second before or after it is not, and that fraction is infinitesimally, immeasurably small. Which house the Vertex is in depends on the accuracy of measurement, and indeed our imagination allows the identification of a moment when it is in neither.

With this realization, we can ask ourselves, “When was I born?” and, “When does the Sun set?”. This is the real reason that astrological aspects deal with orbs.

The experience of the symmetry, regularities and synchronicities entailed in Solar System behaviour is a beautiful one, with the potential to awaken us to both the potency and contingency of our perspective.

The real purpose of a horoscope should not be to define, but to present suggestions as to your state of being in such a way as to help you to ‘get’ your immeasurability, to help you to the sense of wonder at the limits of identification which is the portal leading back out of yourself, out of your self-created problems, predicament or mood, towards the awareness of contingency and emptiness, and to enlightenment.

Whether the configuration of my horoscopes is Northern or Southern Sidereal or Tropical, make the exercise of reading them a meditation, a practice of intellectual and emotional deep breathing.

Phew!

Moon

Last night I was searching for bi-wheel chart templates and stumbled against traditional astrology’s contempt for any effort to apply its interpretations to what is in the sky, the motive which gave it birth.

“The concept of “return charts” and of transits altogether is – on a deeper level – a symbolic concept rather than a physical concept. It should therefore be applied in a consistent symbolic system and not in an inconsistent potpourri of systems.” Astrodienst.

I get that, and who am I to get mixed up in a fight with the big guys? I don’t pretend to be an astrologer. I am merely one of the hordes through the centuries who has gazed up at the Constellation of his Sun Sign and yearned for a consistent symbolic system to connect human life, Constellation and Sign.

The symbols of western tropical astrology may be consistent, and fit neatly and ‘eternally’ into the beautiful symmetry of the Solar System, but I find many of them to be empty, in the sense that the symbol of an ant for human progress is empty when I am trying to cross the road. What is a symbol without content but a signal of delusion, a useless distortion of reality?

The symbolism of the Zodiac must wait for later consideration. The symbol which engages me today is the “Descending” Node, the real moment when the Moon crosses the plane of Earth’s orbit of the Sun, heading downwards, or towards the South Celestial Hemisphere.

We millions of emigrants from across the Equator brought with us a respect for ‘consistency’ verging on idolatry and leading us into disrespect for “primitive” people and “inhospitable” country. Yes, North is ‘up’, but isn’t it nice to find a lunar calendar on the web which shows the phases on the correct side? You may be completely unable to imagine a map of your country drawn ‘upside down’–yes, such a thing is conceivable– but I find the universal representation of the Constellations the ‘wrong’ way up completely useless

So it is with the Nodes of the Moon. Today the Moon ascends, heads upwards to the south! So where does that leave the astrological symbolism of the Nodes’ resonance with karma and challenge? Turned on its head, of course!

Because of the fact that the Moon is crossing the Ecliptic very close to the Aries Point (the real origin of the western astrological system), the real intersection of Ecliptic and Celestial Equator in Pisces, it will be the highest it is ever seen in Gemini on February 28 when it reaches its southernmost ecliptic latitude, and that does symbolize something to me!

More on that at the time. For now, I offer you an illustration of a southern perspective on today’s event. Zoom for higher resolution at this link:

Please be patient while I get up and running.

My intention is to sell you on the idea that astrology is a portal to a clear headspace, and, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere and are interested in astrology already, that:

1) What you may not know is worth knowing; and

2) Some of what you may believe is worth unlearning.
